Emergency Fort Wayne Housing Assistance Program
The United Way of Allen County is creating a new assistance fund, called the “Help for Hard Times” fund. It was established recently to meet the increasing needs of local residents for basic services such as shelter, food, and health care aid.
Help with heating and utility bills
Community Action of Northeast Indiana
People in Fort Wayne and Allen County can get help with heating and utility bills. CANI, which is the Community Action of Northeast Indiana (phone number (800) 589-3506) is now accepting appointments for its Energy Assistance Program (EAP) at all of its offices in Allen, LaGrange, DeKalb, Noble, Steuben, and Whitley counties.
Energy Assistance Program
The state Energy Assistance Program (EAP) will help pay for a portion of a client’s heating bills during both the summer and winter months. The assistance program also provides assistance in the summer, including fans, air conditions, or utility bill credits during summer months, depending on a family’s financial situation. Thousands of people are helped. For example, last year Community Action of Northeast Indiana helped more than 14,000 families with their utility bills as well as heating bills.
Fort Wayne Salvation Army

Food, clothing, and other help in Fort Wayne and Allen County Indiana
These churches, charities, and non-profits may be able to provide food, clothing, baby supplies, or other resources. Call them for the specifics. Adventist Community Services – Provides clothing as well as free food to clients at most once a month. Call (260) 745-1594.
Avalon Food Pantry (phone (260) 747-1531) can offer food, and it is given each week to anyone having a crises, emergency or in need at this time.

Wellspring Interfaith Social Services – This agency runs a food pantry that provides enough food and groceries for 3 meals a day for 5 days per family. Call (260) 422-6618.
Fort Wayne Associated Churches
Associated Churches of FW & Allen Co. is a partnership of local charities and churches. They can also provide families facing a crisis emergency help, including food and very limited financial assistance when funding allows. Call them at (260) 422-3528, or read more.
Lutheran Social Services of Indiana (LSSI) (phone number (260) 426-3347) provides financial assistance to families and individuals that are confronted with difficult life situations and that are facing a financial hardship, such as eviction, housing or mortgage foreclosure, or utility disconnection.
Broadway Christian Church – Provides assistance if applicant meets conditions. You need to be there at 9am. The church requires that applicant have an action letter from a township trustee for financial help request. They may be able to assist with food, clothing and bus tickets once every 14 days. Allen County clothing closets can be turned to for basic needs. The centers will have winter coats, boots, and items year round. Emergency Solutions Grant
The Emergency Solutions Grant (ESG) program exists to assist individuals and families regain stability in permanent housing after experiencing a housing crisis or homelessness. Typically, in Fort Wayne, ESG funds are granted to non-profit agencies serving those who are precariously housed or homeless. Catholic Charities of Allen County and Fort Wayne Indiana provides services to low income and other people in need. They assistance is intended to provide aid to people who need help meeting basic needs and pay for bills, including providing food, clothing, shelter, medical bill assistance, rent help, and utilities. As part of the Catholic Charities agency’s assistance programs, a brief assessment of the applicant will be completed by the agency. Referrals to the program will be made to other local charities and agencies when appropriate. Services are offered to those in need by appointment only. Call the agency at (260) 422-5625. Rental, Mortgage & Foreclosure Assistance
Grants for housing and rent – Families facing eviction, or the homeless, can apply for emergency rent or security deposit help. In some cases, loans may be issued. They also run the
Assistance for children – Services from Community Action of Northeast Indiana include Head Start, vouchers to pay for day care expenses, and transportation.
Medical care can be offered from Hoosier Healthwise. This can be help in obtaining prescriptions and referrals to clinics in Allen County.

The Urban League of Fort Wayne (dial (260) 449-7725)) offers mortgage default, Rental Education, Pre-purchase, Home Ownership Education, and Debt reduction services to both tenants as well as struggling homeowner. The non-profit also coordinates Foreclosure prevention counseling, Loss Mitigation, Rental Delinquency and other free counseling in Allen County.
