Fort Wayne Allen County Fireworks
As Independence Day celebrations draw near, the Indiana fire marshal reminds Hoosiers about the safe and legal ways to buy and store fireworks. Enjoy the “Fort Wayne Night of Lights Fireworks” and other area fireworks schedule
Fireworks Schedule & Tips
• Fireworks should only be purchased from a vendor with a valid Indiana fireworks sales permit.
• Fireworks vendors must have a permit from the Indiana Department of Homeland Security’s Fire and Building Safety Division, which is overseen by the state fire marshal. If a sales permit is not on display, it is OK to ask employees to see it before purchasing any kind of fireworks.
• If a fireworks retailer is not displaying, and is unable to provide a copy of, its permit, customers can call the IDHS Division of Fire and Building Safety at 317-232-2222.
• Fireworks cannot be sold to or purchased by anyone younger than 18.
• Check packages and labels to make sure only 1.4G consumer fireworks are purchased; any other types of fireworks are illegal for consumer sales or purchases in Indiana, and may be more explosive.
• Store fireworks in a cool, dry place.
• Be sure fireworks are out of the reach of children.
• Consider buying glow sticks instead of sparklers for children – sparklers can burn at temperatures high enough to melt glass.

Pet safety
Dogs and cats can easily become overwhelmed by the sudden explosions of fireworks, causing panic and fear. Fort Wayne Animal Care & Control wants pet owners to keep their pets safe and secure.
Every year, the loud booms of fireworks contribute to the increased number of runaway pets that are found and given to Animal Care & Control. To keep pets safe:
• Keep dogs inside your home or in a well-ventilated space when fireworks are being used in your area.
• Cats should be kept inside at all times.
• Secure gates and supervise your animals while outside.
• Be sure to keep a current identification tag on your pet’s collar. Fort Wayne Animal Care & Control now microchips pets for $15 with proof of rabies shot and a current I.D.
• City ordinance prohibits pets from being taken to any parade, festival or celebration. Loud noises increase the chance of your pet fleeing and becoming lost in an unfamiliar area.
• Leaving an animal in a parked car when conditions pose a health hazard will result in law enforcement action. Even on a 70-degree day, the inside of a car can reach temperatures of 120 degrees or more in a matter of minutes. Partly opened windows won’t provide sufficient air, but do provide an opportunity for your pet to be stolen, experience a seizure or suffer death in a short time frame.
• If pets disappear, Animal Care & Control’s business office will be closed July 4 and will re-open July 5 from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. for people to search for a lost pet. Anyone finding a lost animal is asked to file a found report with the shelter. The animal can be kept in the finder’s home or relinquished to Animal Care & Control at 3020 Hillegas Road. Call 427-1244 option 1 for information and to report a found pet. When the center is closed and throughout the holiday, weekend officer assistance can be reached by calling 449-3000.
